…And then came Dexter.
September 10, 2008 by K. Trainor
Because my life is not complicated enough, what with working two businesses, chasing two kids and keeping a wary eye on Evil Chicken HQ, I’ve added a new element to the mix. His name is Dexter.

I am adorable, am I not?
The first thing I must point out is that I don’t do puppies. Ever. My dd is nicknamed Puppy, and that’s as close as I come. I don’t do housebreaking and chewed up shoes and that odd little puppy smell. I do grown up, well trained dogs that already follow commands.
Well, I did. Until I saw dis face. Dis widdle, take-me-home-I’m-so-cute face. Not that he was a whim, mind you, we were already in the market for a dog. But we didn’t get a dog, did we. We got a furball with big feet.
For those that care about such stuff, Dex is a Rottie mix. (No offense to the purebred folks–but I’m partial to mutts, m’self.) He has a full length tail, and it will remain so. I think tail and ear cropping is barbaric–but that’s another post for another blog.
Based on his parents, I’m guessing he’ll be a muscular 100ish lbs. Like our last Rottie mix (rest her sweet soul), he’ll leave poop piles roughly the size of egyptian pyramids.
Can’t wait.
I know he doesn’t look like much of a family protector yet. So far he’s a blankie sucker, (although not an underwear chewer–thank goodness!), and he’s afraid of the dark. He sleeps fine by himself, but only if I leave a light on like Motel 6. In short, he’s a wuss. But he’s MY wuss, and I love him to pieces.
Even though he smells funny.

CUTE.
I love puppies! But I agree that they are a handful, and it would be much easier just to get a fully trained dog.
So cute – you just have to love puppies – sad puppy eyes, hot puppy breath and those big feet will make the world fine at any time. I love dogs – I know my old girl will not be around too much longer. I have always had dogs and this time I was actually thinking of giving it a rest for while. Nah – what was I thinking! I have never started with an older dog – something to think about when the time comes.
He is SO cute. So cute. I just want to squish him. (In the good way.)
What a cute puppy! I got my kids a puppy for Christmas when I became a single mom. Their dad is allergic to animal fur so we’d never been able to have dogs or cats…until the divorce. Getting the puppy was sort of my “in your face” to my ex. The dog has now wound himself around our hearts and we couldn’t imagine life without him–dumb mutt!
I agree with you, tail and ear cropping are cruel. I love to see a wagging tail, why cut it off?
MJ I have to admit, it is MUCH easier. lol! But this is fun, too.
Sherri, I’m afraid it’s hopeless. You are a doggie person through and through.
Kemi, please do not squish my puppy. The evil chickens, however, you may squish until their little eyes pop out. (Not really. Eggs, though!)
Kween…an “in your face” to the ex….BAhahahahaha! Love that little passive aggressive flair. ;0)
Ok everyone, who wants to help out the rookie? Dex is doing well with housebreaking, if I could only get him to pee at “the spot”. He does all major business in one spot in the yard, but he urinates anywhere outside–including right by the front door. I’ve tried taking him out at a dead run toward the right spot, but he comes to a stop and pees as he pleases on the way. Carrying him seems to work, but I won’t be able to for long. Any ideas?
Awwww hims to cute!!! No ideas on the training though, I’m no good at it. Cats are easier. Show them the box, they got it, that’s where they go lol.
Oh, thank God you don’t do puppies! Oh, wait…that’s not what you meant. *Pries mind out of gutter* I’ve been trying the past couple days to find a little pup a home, and thank goodness, I think I’ve finally found one. I love puppies, but they are a lot of work to have around the house!
AmyMay, you’re right. Cats ARE way easier!
Colby, that’s wrong. That’s so, so wrong.
wow!! credit girl! doggies are lots of work, especially little ones who cant protect you.. but at least they can cuddle
nice break on the no- underwear chewing
He is so cute! Welcome back to having a baby in the house!
I couldn’t help it! I couldn’t! The monkey made me do it!
I spoke too soon on the no-underwear chewing. For some reason, he seems to like my husband’s. Odd duck, that doggie. It has something to do with Colby’s monkey. I just KNOW it does!
[...] Dexter the dog is not an underwear chewer. A fact for which I am profoundly grateful. However, he does have a thing for shoes and socks. He doesn’t chew them, exactly…he inhales from them deeply while in a euphoric trance – as though they’re the elixir of life. [...]
…And now he leaves the underwear alone again but snorts socks. Pffft!
Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog.
Cheers! Sandra. R.
